What happens to dividend entitlement when shares are sold on the ex-dividend date?

An investor purchasing shares on or after the ex-dividend date is generally not entitled to the dividend for which that ex-date has been fixed. The entitlement remains with the investor who held the shares in the eligible position before the ex-date, subject to the applicable settlement cycle.
